Moissanite is a stunning gemstone composed of silicon carbide, renowned for its exceptional brilliance and fire. Originally discovered in a meteorite by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr. Henri Moissan in 1893, moissanite is now created in laboratories to achieve its extraordinary quality and purity. This gemstone is a sustainable and ethical alternative to diamonds, offering unparalleled durability and sparkle. With a hardness rating of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is highly resistant to scratches and perfect for daily wear. Its unique ability to reflect light creates a rainbow-like scintillation, making it a popular choice for fine jewelry. At THEIAURA&CO., we embrace moissanite for its beauty, ethical origins, and timeless appeal.

Moissanite vs. Diamond

Moissanite and diamonds are often compared due to their similar appearance and their popularity in engagement and heirloom jewelry. While they share some visual characteristics, they differ significantly in composition, properties, and cost.1. Composition:Moissanite is a lab-created gemstone made from silicon carbide, specifically the 4H crystalline polytype. While it closely resembles a diamond, it is chemically distinct. This striking similarity has made moissanite a leading choice for fine jewelry in recent years.2. Durability:Diamonds are renowned for their unmatched durability, scoring a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale—the highest possible rating. Moissanite, however, is the second-hardest gemstone, with a rating of 9.25. This makes it incredibly resistant to scratches and suitable for everyday wear, ensuring a lifetime of beauty.3. Brilliance & Fire:Moissanites surpass diamonds in light performance:Brilliance: Moissanite has a refractive index of 2.65, compared to a diamond’s 2.42. This means moissanite reflects more white light, resulting in dazzling flashes.Fire: Moissanite’s dispersion (fire) is 0.104, significantly higher than a diamond’s 0.044, giving it vibrant rainbow-like flashes in the right lighting.4. Cost:Moissanites are a budget-friendly alternative to diamonds, offering exceptional beauty without the high price tag. For the same carat weight, a moissanite typically costs 15 to 25 times less than a diamond, making it an ideal option for those seeking affordability without compromising on brilliance or durability.Summary:Moissanite offers a brilliant, durable, and ethical alternative to diamonds. With its superior light performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness, it has become a popular choice for engagement rings and fine jewelry. Whether you’re looking for timeless elegance or a modern sparkle, moissanite provides exceptional value and beauty.
